Once you’ve installed fatigue monitoring devices in your fleet, you’ll get a steady flow of alerts and other data.

Using this data effectively is the key to improving safety and getting good value from your technology investment.

“When you get the data, it’s mind-blowing,” says Martin Corry, NTI’s Transport Risk Engineer, in another article where he talks about fatigue monitoring data.

“You’ve got to stop first and make sure you understand all the data,” he says.

Using your fatigue monitoring data

Deployment is the foundation of success when it comes to driver monitoring systems (DMSes). 

Done well, you’ll have drivers committed to improving their skills and safety.

Done poorly, you’ll have drivers circumventing the devices and feeling they’re not trusted.

The critical factors are to introduce the devices before they’re installed in cabins and to use the data they generate as tools for improvement, not punishment.

Finally, as a manager you’ll need to commit to regular reviews and calibration to make sure the DMSes are always delivering the data you need – it’s not a ‘set and forget’ process.

Data template

It’s also important to share data with your drivers.

This simple template (including example pages) is an easy way to highlight your DMSes’ safety benefits.

Simply choose a data point for the month and note how it’s trending (up or down).

Then note how the company is going to respond.

Be sure to include what management will be doing – don’t leave all the work to your drivers. 

Print the template out on a large sheet. A3 will do but we recommend going as large as possible. A1 is ideal. A PowerPoint version of the template is also available to download here. 

Put it on a noticeboard and make sure you discuss it at the next toolbox, town hall or other all-staff meeting.

Constant communication, including keeping your team up to date and involving all the company in your responses will help ensure you get the best value from your new technology.
